Once again we had the opportunity to sit and chat with the equally beautiful & talented artist known as She Is Ryan or SIR for short. Ryan openly discusses being a young woman growing up in Brooklyn and more importantly what it took for her to grow into the multi talented powerhouse that she is now. Through her intelligence and sheer willpower she gives us a portion of her wisdom, showing us not only what it takes to build a brand but to grow into your identity solely by being comfortable with yourself.
CRASHprez has been one of my favorite underground MCs and one of my favorite journalists for a couple of years now. He’s one of the few artists in the DMV area that I feel isn’t afraid to step outside of your “typical rapper topics” and address society and the injustices that occur right here in America. He released this video yesterday titled “Young Black Man Robbed, Shot, Lynched in America,” which portrays himself as a common black man being assaulted by various groups of different ages, races and social classes. The accompanying song speaks out aggressively to how black males are treated in America, and provides an interesting and somewhat exciting backdrop to the video. This is an outstanding piece of work done by CRASHprez and (presumably) his fellow First Wave Scholars at the University Of Wisconsin.
Sometimes simple visuals make the best visuals. Shot by the brilliant Kreative Khaos AKA Helena Banks, Ciscero and Matt McGhee provide just that.
Fashion has a way of grasping a person’s mind and holding it hostage. Creating a whole universe around the greatness that is designed, sewn, put together and finally displayed for all the world to swoon over. Brands start-up with a vision, an identity because from the beginning they must know who they are and why they are creating. That individuality is what sets one brand apart from the next but sadly that doesn’t last very long for many. Their purpose fades and they soon become just another pile of clothing. I’ll tell you one thing though, among the few there is a brand that won’t be the one to lose their identity. They pride themselves too much on their originality and exclusivity which only makes a fashion heart like mine love them even more. Read More
“We want the old Danny Brown back.” This is a theme that you hear throughout your listen of Danny Brown’s long awaited album “OLD.” If you follow Danny on twitter, amidst all of the sexual back and forth between him and his quite massive female fan base, you see a few tweets from die-hard fans saying variations of “We want that Hybrid Danny Brown back.” For those who are unaware, The Hybrid was Danny’s debut album that dropped back in 2010. This album was very gritty, filled with drug tales, punchlines and a more, sedated, version of the Danny we know now. A lot of his (male) fan base came from that era, i.e. “the old Danny Brown.” XXX was the album that came before OLD, which is more of a Danny experimenting with sounds; a sign of what was to come (insert ecstasy filled, sex romps and wild ass hair here). And now we have OLD, the response to “We want the old Danny Brown back.” The question is, do we get that Danny Brown back, or not ?

As creative people it is important we show empathy and support to those who are working just as hard as we are, especially us women. I am a firm believer in empowering other women instead of devaluing them. We can be strong factors in the changes of the world if we stay strong and understand we have to work twice as hard to make an impact. That is why when women such as myself come across other talented women our energies vibe with one another and many of times great work is produced. Read More
